5/24/11 - Lockport, NY - 40 miles
After viewing Old Ft. Niagara, we headed back to the campground, packed up and moved about 40 miles to Lockport, NY. I wanted to see the Erie Canal which connects the Hudson River and the Atlantic Ocean at sea level with the Niagara River and the Great Lakes at 570-feet above sea level. This 363-mile engineering feat was dug by hand between 1817 and 1825. More people migrated westward on the Erie Canal than later went through Ellis Island. Originally 83 locks were used to raise and lower boats, but none as dramatically as those in the aptly named Lockport. We stayed in a Walmart here tonight.
