School - 1869

This was a one room school house. It cost $8.00 per year to send a child to school...so some families could not send a child to school because they didn't have the money. Usually only one child per family attended school....being the one who was the most prone to learning and they were expected to teach the siblings when they got home from school. The stronger boys did not attend school as they were needed to work on the farms. The only writing instrument was the slate and a piece of slate was used to write with...you can see this slate peg in the picture. This slate had to stay at school and there were no books.
