7/3/11 - Last Day on PEI

It was good to be back in church this morning....we have missed three Sundays...last week while traveling and the previous two Sundays we were in Quebec and didn't want to go to a French speaking church since we wouldn't understand a thing. The Cavendish Baptist Church began in July of 1869 with 22 members. The early beginnings of the church are associated with three historic family names...one of which was Macneill (Lucy Maud Montgomery's grandparents who raised her). There were numerous pictures in the church that the author had taken in the late 1890's. This is the first church we have ever attended that did not have a membership. The church had a thriving congregation all through the early and mid-1900's, but as Cavendish became predominantly a tourist area, the population decreased dramatically year round and the numbers of resident Baptists dropped off. In the early 1970s it was decided that a summer ministry would be carried out from late June until early September. The minister was extremely good at filling this summer position and interacting with those in attendance as well as giving a great message. We weren't sure where to park when we pulled in....as you can see in the last two pictures we pulled around down a grassy hill into the parking lot in the back and what a view it was from there. This church was right across from the KOA Campground that we spent 8 days at here in Cavendish.
