6/7/10 - Mackinac Bridge, Mackinaw City, MI

"The Mighty Mac" stands tall and majestic in the storied Straits of Mackinac and connects Michigan's upper and lower peninsulas. The bridge is five miles long and is the world's longest total suspension bridge. It is 8,344 feet from cable anchorage to cable anchorage. 33 marine foundations support the uninterrupted superstructure. The two huge tower foundations penetrate more than 200 feet below water and were built out on the water with boats, barges and ships handling the men, machinery and materials. The building of the Mackinac Bridge was first proposed in 1884. From then until November 1, 1957, it was know as the bridge that couldn't be built.
We took this picture while traveling over the bridge on our way to Sault Ste. Marie, MI. It was an overcast day when we left Mackinaw City.
