Confederation Bridge to PEI
The Confederation Bridge at 13 kilometers (8 miles) is the world's longest bridge over ice-covered water. Construction took 4 years and opened on June 1, 1997. Over 6,000 employees were hired over the four-year production. The Bridge was built in a 'S' shape to help eliminate the hypnotic effect on drivers making the 12 minute crossing. The highest point is at the shipping navigation span which reaches 60 meters above water allowing vessels such as cruise ships etc. to pass underneath. Their is a toll, however it is collected when you leave Prince Edward Island.
