Halifax Citadel
Since the founding of Halifax in 1749, Citadel Hill has served as the site of four different forts, each having been built during a time of war or perceived threat. The stone fort that stands today was constructed from 1828 to 1856, a period of 28 years, and was the last and strongest of the Citadels. Its purpose was to deter an overland assault on the city and dockyard, and such was its strength and that of the other harbour defences that no enemy every dared attack.
