Hyder and Stewart are at the head of Portland Canal, a narrow saltwater fjord approx. 90 miles long. The fjord forms a natural boundary between Alaska and Canada. Stewart has a deep harbor and boasts of being Canada's most northerly ice-free port. The area behind the two small buildings in the middle was full of floating lumber. Several times a week large vessels come in and pick up the lumber and ship it all over the world.
