6/30/07 - Chicken, AK to Tok, AK - 77 miles

We had a short drive today so 7 of us decided to take the tour of the old townsite of Chicken before leaving. Then we were on our way to paved roads finally ...(about 3 miles from Chicken). The paved road was still pretty rough in places with quite a few frost heave areas. We were now on The Taylor Highway and there was a lot of burned areas with the fireweed covering large areas of the burnt forest from the fires of 2004. The total number of fires in 2004 were 707 (not an unusually high number) but the acreage burnt was very high....over 6.3 million acres, making it the larges recorded fire season in Alaska history. When we arrived at Tok we immediately started cleaning! Wildlife sightings today: None If you want to see where we are: www.mapdatastorm.users.com/user1.cfm?user=2430
