The trans-Alaska oil pipe-line takes crude oil on an 800-mile journey from Alaska's North Slope on the Beaufort Sea to the port of Valdez on Prince William Sound. Much of the pipeline is buried and special ventilators are used to keep the permafrost frozen and the line stable. The 48-inch pipeline was completed 30 years ago.
