6/23/07 - 3rd Day in Whitehorse, Yukon
Got some laundry done today, did some sightseeing, went out to dinner @ Klondike Rib & Salmon BBQ and then went to the Frantic Follies stage show. Wildlife sightings today: NONE If you want to see where we are at: www.mapdatastormusers.com/user1.cfm?user=2430
6/22/07 - 2nd Day in Whitehorse, Yukon
Whitehorse is the capital of the Yukon and is known as the "Wilderness City" of Canada. It is nestled on the banks of the famous Yukon River and is surrounded by mountains and lakes. The population of the Yukon is 32,000 and over 23,000 of that number live in Whitehorse. There is lots to do and see in Whitehorse and they have plenty of shopping and restaurants. Wildlife sightings today: 1 Coyote If you want to see where we are at: www.mapdatastorrmusers.com/user1.cfm?user=2430
Miles Canyon was an imposing challenge for miners and stampeders on their way up the Yukon to the goldfields, mainly because the narrow channel through the canyon was followed by the daunting Whitehorse & Squaw Rapids, which are now covered by the dam. We walked across the suspension bridge and had a very enjoyable hike along the river. The area was just covered with lupine....really a pretty walk.
There were several float plane excursion companies here on the Yukon River. We watched a couple of the take-offs......I'm hoping I can get up enough nerve to do this in Alaska! There was all kind of activity down on the river. The tour boat that you see in the one picture, we did not go on it, but Hugo's & Dubuc's did and enjoyed it! There was a kayaker out doing her laps....she said she had worn her dad out the dad before.
Whitehorse Fish Ladder and Dam is the longest wooden fish ladder in the world. The fish ladder was not flowing while we were there, as the salmon do not return until mid-July through September during the salmon-spawning season when they return to their original river tributaries, this is over a 2000 mile trip up the Yukon for the salmon. They do not eat for 3 months, spawn and then die.

6/21/07 - Teslin, YT to Whitehorse, YT - 98 miles
Hugo's & Dubuc's left at our normal 8:30 time. We washed our motorhome and Dan & Jenny washed there's at Teslin this morning. The RV park that we planned on staying at in Whitehorse didn't have room so three of us went to Pioneer Park and parked in their overflow section up on top of a hill. We had a great view and weren't as close as they had the sites in their regular campgrounds, plus it was free (for three nights). At 12:30 am I could see as far as the eye could see and the sky was a beautiful reddish color. Wildlife sightings today: NONE If you want to see where we are at: www.mapdatastormusers.com/user1.cfm?user=2430
Teslin River Bridge....there was construction on this bridge and as you can see it was a pretty tight fit for the RV traffic. This bridge was constructed with a high clearance above the river to permit steamers to pass under.
We stopped for cinmamon rolls at Johnson's Crossing as soon as we were off the bridge.
The Old Log Church , erected in 1900, is one of the older original buildings in Whitehorse and tells the fascinating story of the early Yukon missionaries. By 1861, long before the great Gold Rush, the first missionaries had ventured into this region. At trading posts or in mining camps or in the company of aboriginal peoples, these pioneers sought to miister to the scattered population of this vast area. They still hold services here during the sommer months, if we would have been here on Sunday I'm sure we would have come here for church.
6/20/07 - Watson Lake, YT to Teslin, YT - 171 miles
We had a pretty drive today...stayed at Mukluk Annie's which is about 6 miles west of Teslin. We are not seeing much in the way of wildlife now. Wildlife sightings today: 1 Buffalo, 1 Moose. If you want to see where we are at: www.mapdatastormusers.com/user1.cfm?user=2430
Mukluk Annie's was the best deal we have come across yet on this trip. For their salmon bake customers (you can order whatever you want off their menu) you get free RV parking (dry camping), houseboat ride and RV wash. We spent $35.00 on our dinner and did the boat ride, RV wash and dry camped right on the lake...very pretty site!
