Bobbin lace

We watched two different women do bobbin lace work. I had never seen this before and it was very detailed and beautiful work. This is how lace is made and the patterns they used looked way to involved for me! There were 20 bobbins that they wind around each other. This was the process for making the lace that was used on so much clothing during this time.

Tour Guide

We took a 75-minute tour here and our guide was great. She told us that only 20% of the fortress has been re-constructed and there are no plans to do anymore. She really knew her history and enjoyed talking about it.
There was an archaeological dig going on in one of the backyards of a large home.
Everyone that worked here was in costume and we were told that over 300 people worked at the Fortress.

8/25/11 - Fortress of Louisbourg

The literature said that France's jewel in the 18th century is Canada's treasure today. The Fortress of Louisbourg is North America's largest historical reconstruction. The sights and sounds of the 18th century come alive in the Fortress.

Louisbourg Playhouse

We decided to go to the playhouse to night. "One Night in a Cape Breton Kitchen" was the presentation by a group of five muscians, as well as doing skits and comedy. As far as we were concerned it was just an okay show.

S & LRailway Museum

The guys wanted to go to this railway station that has been restored to a railway museum.
We are looking back across the water at the RV Park.
Karen and Richard got in right on schedule....we had some lunch and then took off to see what was in the area. This lighthouse was for the Fortress of Louisbourg. There was a pretty coastline here.

8/24/11 - Louisbourg - 34 miles

After getting off the ferry at 7:00 AM we had a short drive to our RV park in Louisbourg. They had told us to come in as soon as we got off the ferry and get some rest before heading off for sightseeing, so we got to the campground about 8:30 AM.....kind of nice to be able to check in that early without additional fees. Karen and Richard's ferry gets in at 9:30 so they are a couple of hours behind us.

Coming off the ferry

We landed in North Sydney, Nova Scotia at 7:00 am. We are now back on Atlantic Time, which is four hours ahead of Arizona. While in Newfoundland we were 4 1/2 hours ahead.....it really was weird just changing the time by 30 minutes. We watched from an upper deck as the crew lowered the bridges to drive off and then the first car was off.
